Marble sculpture and mixed media paintings
explore 'reflections, light and shadows'Mawson Gallery presents Reflections, Light and Shadows - an exhibition of fine marble carvings by Canberra sculptor Berendina de Ruiter and mixed media envrionmental paintings by Queensland artist Susanne McLean.
Berendina is Dutch-born and migrated to Australia in the early 1980s after which she completed a sculpture degree at the Canberra School of Art.
In this exhibition her works are about interplay with light and shadows on sculpture with the aim of creating a sense of peace, quiet contemplation and reflection.
Berendina was a Churchill Fellow in Tuscany (near the famous Carrara marble quarries) where she deepened her knowledge of marble carving. This was to be the first of several visits working alongside other international artists. Berendina has exhibited and worked on commissions in Holland and Germany.
“I strive for beauty, harmony and serenity,” Berendina said. “Sculpture is my passion and my ‘food for the soul’ and I believe that we all need nourishment of that kind, be it through music, art or the beauty of our natural environment.”
Queensland artist Susanne McLean paints to explore the planet and the web of life that binds us. Her work is large she says it is distils the essence of her scientific research and imagery over many years.
She has had some 20 solo exhibitions, many group exhibitions and residencies. She has worked on public art and as an artist for theatrical productions.
Susanne thinks about painting all the time and says her passion for painting cannot be taught, but comes from the soul and the sheer joy of creation.
During a residency at the Cooroora Institute in 2008, reviewer Tamsin Kerr wrote that Susanne’s ability to capture the voice of the land as well as our emotive and intricate dependency is breath-taking.
“Rather than imposing a traditional landscape painting upon the viewer, McLean uses techniques that overtly ask the viewer to impose themselves and their preconceptions upon the work.”
The exhibition at MAWSON GALLERY, 63 Wilkins Street, Mawson opens on 30 September and runs until 14 October.
Opening hours are 10.30am - 5.30pm Wednesday to Sunday. Phone 6161 2177 or visit www.mawsongallery.com.au
